Edgewood sits on the plateau above the Puyallup valley, and the plateau soils here run to Kapowsin rather than the deep valley silt below. Kapowsin is moderately well drained over a weakly cemented pan the USDA puts at 64 to 74 centimetres — about 25 to 29 inches — which is shallower than the 35 inches typical of Alderwood, with a perched water table rising to within 28 centimetres in winter. Less soil above the restriction than a homeowner would guess from looking at a flat lawn.
Core aeration works the top few inches — the root zone, where compaction from construction and foot traffic actually sits. It does not reach the dense glacial layer 20 to 40 inches down, and nothing a lawn service does will.
