Puyallup lawns sit on two different grounds. Down on the valley floor the soil is river deposit — Puyallup fine sandy loam is the single most mapped soil inside the city, and it is well drained with no restrictive layer near the surface. Up on the hills you are more likely on Kitsap silt loam, or on Kapowsin, which carries a cemented layer around 25 inches down. Worth knowing locally: WSU has run a research and extension centre on West Pioneer since 1894, which makes this valley some of the most studied ground in the state.
Core aeration works the top few inches — the root zone, where compaction from construction and foot traffic actually sits. It does not reach the dense glacial layer 20 to 40 inches down, and nothing a lawn service does will.
