What aeration actually does

The machine pulls plugs of soil out of the lawn and drops them on the surface. That opens the root zone, so water, air and fertilizer get down to the roots instead of running off ground that has been packed hard by mowing, foot traffic and whatever the builder drove over it.

Aeration reaches

the top few inches

— the root zone, which is where compaction from traffic and construction actually sits. It does not reach the dense glacial layer 20 to 40 inches down, and nothing a lawn service does will.

Aeration on its own

$120 up to 2,000 sq ft, then $15 for each additional 1,000. Tax included, out the door. Find your lawn size, read your price.

Where I’m working

Tukwila is in King County.

The ground in Tukwila

Tukwila is Duwamish valley floor, and almost none of it is original ground. The valley was river bottom, then it was straightened, diked and filled for industry, so most Tukwila turf sits on alluvium topped with fill of unknown depth. A shallow valley water table underneath and made ground on top is a combination that compacts quickly and stays wet late.

Core aeration works the top few inches — the root zone, where compaction from construction and foot traffic actually sits. It does not reach the dense glacial layer 20 to 40 inches down, and nothing a lawn service does will.

Aeration in Tukwila — FAQ

Do you aerate in Tukwila?

Yes. Tukwila sits in King County, and it is on my aeration routes. I also work Seattle, Renton, SeaTac and Burien. Send the address and I will tell you straight rather than guess.

When is the best time to aerate?

Early September through mid-November is the main window here, while the soil is still warm and the rain has softened it. Spring works too. I do not aerate frozen or waterlogged ground.

Do I need to know my lawn size?

No. Send the address and I measure it from satellite — that is what the price is based on.

Do you clean up the plugs?

No, and you do not want me to. The cores break down on their own within a couple of weeks and return that soil to the lawn. Raking them off removes it.

Should I add seed and fertilizer?

That is the one upsell worth hearing. The holes are open for a few days, so seed and starter fertilizer applied the same visit get down into the root zone instead of sitting on top. If you want all three in one visit, that is the fall renovation package. If you just want the lawn opened up, aeration on its own is fine.

What does core aeration cost?

It is priced by lawn size: $120 up to 2,000 sq ft, then $15 for each additional 1,000 sq ft, up to $180 for a 6,000 sq ft lawn. Every price includes Washington sales tax.

Is the price really what I pay?

Yes. Every price here includes Washington sales tax. No trip charge, no fuel surcharge, no add-on for the basics.

Do I have to sign a contract?

No. This is a one-time job. No contract, no auto-renew, no cancellation fee.

What if it rains?

Saturated ground compacts underfoot, so I do not work a soaked lawn. If your day is too wet I text you and move it, usually within the same week.
