The machine pulls plugs of soil out of the lawn and drops them on the surface. That opens the root zone, so water, air and fertilizer get down to the roots instead of running off ground that has been packed hard by mowing, foot traffic and whatever the builder drove over it.

No, and you do not want me to. The cores break down on their own within a couple of weeks and return that soil to the lawn. Raking them off removes it.
That is the one upsell worth hearing. The holes are open for a few days, so seed and starter fertilizer applied the same visit get down into the root zone instead of sitting on top. If you want all three in one visit, that is the fall renovation package. If you just want the lawn opened up, aeration on its own is fine.
